Currently the system is set up so that an owner of a blue contract is responsible for the entire amount of the contract for the entire length of the contract. In effect, it's equivalent to dead money in the NFL. On the other hand, it seems reasonable that an owner with cap space could choose to take a larger one-year hit to free up space in future years. I think that year all 1-year contracts should be charged at full amount. Owners of 3-year contracts would have the option, declared at time of dropping the player, of paying full amount over the remaining life of the contract, or taking all of it in the current year, with future years being charged at 50%. So if a contract was for $10M/yr, owner could take a hit of $20M in the current year (10+5+5). One caveat-if the player is dropped in the 2nd year, then the hit would be $15M (10+5).
This is BOD approved & starting this year! Any questions?
